Sweet as a Rose
The mango was sweet as sugar.
The boys were sour as a lime
The milk was sour as, as…
My teacher looks sweet as a rose.
I am sweet as a sweety.
The girl makes a sour face
like when eating a green tamarind.
- Shania Spencer
The day is hot
The wind was cold
The sun was hot
The night was cold
and my food was very cold.
Oh, and one thing I forgot:
my tea was hot.

China’s Festival
In China’s biggest festival,
in a crowded street, a boy and girl
felt happy and in love.
They walked into a forest path,
surprised by a baby tiger
wondering all alone.
- Teshanna Fitzpatrick
The Ice is Cold
The ice is cold
but the fire is hot
blazing like the sun on a summer’s day
then cold as snow on a winter’s night
the cool breeze whistling
the hot lava boiling
in a volcano
- Teshanna Fitzpatrick
In the Night Bar
In the night bar
me and my friend
were feeling elated
we saw things
like darks lights
and lots of money

At church

feeling bless
we saw lots of baskets
I remember
when we were on a picnic
with all the family

My Brother and I
My brother and I went to go fishing
catching the biggest
is both our wish
and big fish is what we catch.
No matter the size,
they still make a splash.
Some we take
home to eat
and some we keep.

It is
I think my brother has no right to hit me.
It is wrong to curse somebody.
It is right to go to school.
My dog has no right to run away.
It is wrong to go back down.
It is wrong to lie on someone.
My school work is very hard for me.
The choir was easy to sit in on.
My brother bites me easy all the time.
My word is very easy to do.
The man talk easy when he is vex.
The rain is falling very hard.
- Annetta Allen
On a Cold Night
On a cold night at a casino,
we gathered together around
a broken hearth
when a man walked into a beautiful woman.
He asked her on a date
but she didn’t answer.
She was dumb.
The man felt sorry that she could not talk.
He stepped out in a rainy night.
- Keifer Allen
His Cat
My family went to Marshal Falls.
My mother found a man.
She felt sorry for him.
We all introduced ourselves.
He showed us a book with a card
on a bench that had a a dead rat.
He told us his cat died.
His cat was the only thing that he had.

The Red Apple
I’d be so glad if I could have a green apple.
They look so tasty and red,
the delicious juice dropping from your mouth.
Sometimes it is green, but it tastes so good.
I just wish it could be ripe.
Today the apple got red, finally.
- Marcia Stephen
Where they Met
I can remember one day
in the children’s play park.
There was a young man
and a young woman
who were talking
about their feelings.
Then the man said, “let’s walk
into the sun,” and they started to.
The next morning they were
trying to remember where they met.

Being a Doctor
I want to be a doctor
don’t matter what it takes,
a few lashes from a Guyanese teacher.
Even from Canada
and the United States of America;
that will get me in line.
Corrections from the bible
I don’t mind.
Going to church,
singing in the choir,
listening to my Sunday school teacher–
that’s my heart’s desire.
I’m not leaving you forever,
Shania is getting big,
from nursery
to university.
If you don’t take in your education,
you will live in misery.
- Shania Wilson
Keep It
Anywhere you go, you must know why you’re going;
and when you stop, know where you’re staying.
Don’t go about life without a reason,
that’s a sign that you don’t know what you’re doing.
This is not a question,
but a statement
I’m making–
don’t blame anyone.
For any bad that has happened.
The spiritual life is best left for the living.
Just pay and receive
a blessing.
- Shania Wilson
Bartica Market
Early morning you will hear
the vendors cry:
“Come buy our juicy:.
Come by! Come by!”
Oranges, bananas,
five fingers, balatas,
smooth brown berries,
West Indians cherries,
juicy water mellons,
grapes and lemons,
“Come buy our juicy fruits:
Come buy! Come buy!”
Tamarind, jamoons,
mangoes, coconuts,
green vegetables like lettuce and pop-choi,
callaloo bush and bora so fresh,
big yellow pumpkins
with plenty vitamins.
Small red tomatoes and ochroes.
“When you want to fry:
Come bai! Come bai!”
Cheep and sweet,
fresh and juicy,
make you pot spicy
and irresistible.
“Come buy at Bartica Market:
Come by! Come by!”
- Shania Wilson

Anxious
In a night bar crowded with people
men and women there
feeling very happy
stepped on the stage
and started to dance.
One Saturday night,
I went to the store
to buy some ice-cream.
I was feeling happy
but in between
I was anxious
because we went to the night bar
where it was crowded with people
boys, girls, men and women
they were feeling my happiness
so they started to dance.
Why was I anxious?
It is because my man wasn’t there.
He was in the back dam far away.
- Nashana Williams
When Hard Rains Blow
I feel cold every time
when hard rains blow.
Every day
when the sun blazes I feel hot.
When cold fog falls
it wets up the grass.
At night the place is cold.
- Shaquille Khan
The Country Is
The country is big.
The country is small.
The country is medium
and that is all.
Boys and girls live
together in it.
They are happy because
they are here.
Bells are ringing
every Sunday morning
and children are playing
in the evening!

I Have a Place
I have a place where many persons live.
They feel happy sometimes,
they feel sad sometimes.
They feel sad mostly.
Then, they feel happy again.
In my place, I have
cheese, spoons, forks, knives,
plates and many other things.
Every night the people in my place
talk about their brothers and sister’s
birthdays.
Memories every night.
- Ayube Khan
The Tea
The tea my sister made for me is hot.
The boy has a hot temper.
The water around him is cold.
The night is cold.
I went into the freezer and felt it.
Today the sun is hot.

My Mom and Cousins
My mom and cousins
like to go to the river
to bather and play with the water.
My cousins play
with the sand.
My brother was running
and he tripped on a wood.
He bruised. He thought
that it was fun, the pain.
- Alliyah Hopkinson
It’s Raining
It’s raining and the place is cold.
When it stops raining,
the place will get hot.
My skin will get hot
I love to bathe with cold water.
But it’s 90 degrees hot now.

A Bright Sunday While Visiting Brazil
My grandmother, mother, sister,
cousin and I attended
the church service.
I was glad even though
the place was hot.
After a long time, it became
cold and I became hungry.
The pews were all
filled, we had to sit on chairs.
Bibles were given to us to read.
After the holiday, we returned
to Trinidad in time for Christmas Day.
I went with my family,
we had lots of fun there
We went to the beach,
we take a good bath,
we buy food stuffs
from the big market.
I heard the birds whistling
and the cars driving.
I tasted a lot of delicious foods,
mash potatoes, sandwiches and more.
I saw the different kinds of animals:
cats, cows, dogs, and ducks.
I touched the colourful clothes
and the cars driving.
I smelt the lovely roses
and the delicious foods.
In Guyana, I’ve never seen
anything like that.
Brazil and Trinidad are more
beautiful than I could ever imagine.
- Shanae Heber
My Mango
In the dawn, I was eating
a sweet mango.
I was happy when I ate
the mango.
The place was very quiet.
The grass was very green.
The mango was big.
And then there was
the ending of my sweet mango.
- Shanae Heber

The Back Room
I lay awake in my bed listeing to the rain beat on the roof of our house. Lightening flashed. Thunder clapped and the trees swayed from side to side giving the illusion that they would fall. Four hours passed, and it seems that morning would not come. Then suddenly there was a loud bang coming from the back room. It had always given off a supernatural feeling to me.
I went to see what was the suspicious bang, and as I got closer to the room, the bang became more frequent, but in faded, fainter manner. Then I notice, there is something which is moving to cause the continuous bangings.
But I would rather try to see what is making the sound than not to sleep at all. So I find the courage to enter the room, just to find that my mom’s pet cat had found it’s way into the room and knocked over a jar.
That night I found out with the lights on in the back room, I am more comfortable and peaceful.
- Denzil Troyer
